About The Pearl

A Legacy of Heritage, Elegance, and Enduring Resilience

The Pearl is more than a home—it is a living expression of history, grace, and legacy. Nestled in Eastern Long Island, this distinctive property reflects over a century of family heritage, cultural significance, and quiet sophistication.

We are honored to steward this treasured estate, which has remained in the VanAllen family for more than 100 years. Our family’s roots in Westhampton Beach and Quiogue, New York date back to 1898, when Charles Martin migrated from North Carolina in search of opportunity and began building a life in this community. He later married Lilian VanAllen, our great-aunt, who was born near Kingston, New York, in the mid-1800s.

A Visionary Beginning

In 1920, Lilian VanAllen Martin—affectionately known as “Aunt Lil”—acquired this 1.25-acre property while working as a realtor selling adjacent land. At a time when such achievements were rare for Black women, she secured and signed her own mortgage, demonstrating remarkable independence, foresight, and determination.

By 1922, she completed construction of the 2,100-square-foot Colonial home that still stands today—an enduring testament to her vision.

Oak Cottages: Hospitality with Purpose

Aunt Lil transformed the home into a bed-and-breakfast known as Oak Cottages. It served as a welcoming and dignified retreat for Black domestic workers—maids, cooks, and butlers—who were employed by local hotels and affluent families but were not permitted to stay where they worked.

She also extended her hospitality to visitors of St. Paul’s AME Zion Church in Quogue, creating a space where comfort, respect, and community were always present.

Through her entrepreneurial spirit, Aunt Lil not only sustained her household but also paid off the mortgage and supported her family for decades—establishing a legacy defined by both purpose and perseverance.

Generations of Grace and Gathering

Following Aunt Lil’s transition, the home was lovingly inherited by her niece, Margaret VanAllen Strain. Together with her husband, Samuel Edward Strain, Sr., she raised their three children within these walls.

The home became a place where traditions were honored, memories were thoughtfully created, and hospitality was extended with effortless warmth. Family and cherished guests alike experienced a sense of belonging that continues to define The Pearl today.

Preserving a Timeless Estate

In 2004, Margaret VanAllen Strain passed the baton of ownership to the next generation, ensuring the estate would remain within the VanAllen family for years to come.

With a deep respect for its history, the family has remained committed to preserving and restoring this remarkable property. Each renovation has been thoughtfully executed to honor its Colonial architectural character while introducing the comforts and refinements of modern living. The house has a central HVAC system, a gourmet kitchen with granite counters, WiFi for recreation or work from home, spacious rooms, and a relaxing side yard with a hot tub.

The Pearl Today

Today, the home is known as The Pearl, named in honor of Margaret VanAllen Strain’s love of her pearl necklace—a symbol of elegance, strength, and timeless beauty.

In tribute to both Lilian VanAllen Martin and Margaret VanAllen Strain, Oak Cottages Heritage, LLC was established in 2017 to carry their vision forward. Since its founding, the company has welcomed guests from across the United States and around the world, offering a refined yet deeply personal hospitality experience.
